September 2021... News, Events and What We are Reading

Rentrée & Read!

Roughly translated, the French phrase la rentrée means the "re-entry". For my Francophile friends and for me it means back to school and back to work as everyone returns from their August holidays. I always loved going back to school – as a young girl and even as a teenager. All the newness – new classes, new shoes, new experiences.

After a long Labor Day weekend, it’s a time to get excited about sweater weather, camel coats, classrooms, leaves turning, pencils and notebooks, new loafers… and Indian Summer reading.

Jasmin Darznik

The Bohemians

Dorothea Lange – the legendary Great Depression-era photographer – was an iconic San Francisco figure. Her many accomplishments and early experiences are artfully chronicled in this novel, set in the gritty-yet-glittering 1920’s San Francisco, an era that would shape her into the artist who captured the zeitgeist of the 1930s.

A well-researched portrait by New York Times bestselling author Jasmin Darznik.

Wines of The Month

This is one of my favorite “house” wines that I serve with confidence to all my guests. It’s a luscious French Grand Vin de Bourgogne a 2018 Marsannay from the Jean-Claude Boisset winery in Les Ursulines. It is an elegant and smooth alternative for those who are somewhat weary of California chardonnay! And it’s very reasonably priced!

For an introduction to more JCB wines, join us for our Bottles & Books winetasting on Tuesday, September 21st! Tchin Tchin!

Gods of Jade and Sorrow

By Silvia Moreno-Garcia

In celebration of Latinx Heritage Month in the U.S. (September 15 – October 15) which recognizes the cultures, histories, and achievements of people of Latin American descent, we have chosen a book by a notable Hispanic author who has penned many critically acclaimed novels, including Mexican Gothic and Velvet Was the Night which is in our Recommended Reading this month. Gods of Jade and Sorrow is one of her earlier most classic works. I wanted to read the late, great Rosario Castellano’s  Nine Guardians, but alas it is not readily available. Moreno-Garcia is a tribute to her heritage.

The Book: “A dazzling fairytale and whirlwind tour of 1920's Mexico... vivid with jazz, the memories of revolution and gods, demons and magic” – NPR

Seeped in magical realism inspired by Mexican folklore, mythology and history, the book is also a feminist, coming of age journey which will take you from the Yucatan to Mexico City.

The Author: Moreno-Garcia’s most recent books were Velvet Was The Night and Mexican Gothic.

The book group said they are looking for books they wouldn’t normally read; this may be such a selection.

Paperback – $17

Book club participants receive a 10% discount if you buy the book from us.

December 14th (this will also be a Book Club holiday party!)

What We're Reading

Cloud Cuckoo Land
Anthony Doerr

In a novel with a historical, a current day and a futuristic story, I am hard pressed to describe any one story. Anthony Doerr weaves all three with such an elegant ease that you forget everything else around you just to turn to the next chapter. Set in 1453 Constantinople, a library in current day Idaho and an interstellar ship in the near future, the novelist has written a book that touches on our love of stories, the importance of good steward to our planet and what it means to love those around us. Angela K.

A Spy Above The Clouds
Ciji Ware

Sausalito author, Ciji Ware has penned her 13th (lucky!) novel, the second in her Spy Sister Series that started with Landing by Moonlight. The series is based on the real-life stories of women secret agents in WWII. This one is set in the majestic French Alps where the young American dilettante Constance Vivier-Clark – an ace on skis – has decided to do something meaningful with her life and begins working with the resistance in Nazi-occupied France. A passionate and dramatic page-turner, it is a story of epic heroism, tragedy, and love. Great historical fiction. Cheryl P.

Velvet Was The Night
Silvia Moreno-Garcia

Maite is a dreamer surrounded by the chaos and violence of the revolution stirring in 1970s Mexico City. She loves her romance serials and collecting records, two activities frowned upon by her mother as a waste of time and energy for a 30 year old “spinster.” So when her glamorous neighbor Leonora asks her to cat-sit, she does so as a means to snoop around her apartment and life. Little does Maite know that the vicarious life she has been living will soon become a reality. When Leonora doesn’t return as promised- and seems to be in possession of some very important film- guerilla groups, the very questionable DFS, and a rat named Elvis all are focused on Maite. Leonora has disappeared and so have the film canisters that everyone seems to want and Maite seems to be the unknowing key. This is a mystery, a pulp fiction account of a time of true fear, danger and blood. Evan A.

The Martin Beck Mysteries
Maj Sjöwall and Per Wahlöö

In a world where the Lew Archer novels were nearing their end, where the 87th Precinct novels were in mid-run, and where the Travis McGee novels were just gaining traction, out of Sweden came the first of the Martin Beck novels, Roseanna. Whether in 1968 there was any inkling of it, this series of 10 novels would inspire a generation of crime writers, while upsetting entirely our expectations of the police procedural. Though disenchantment would scar the last few entries, the series itself is revelatory, almost beyond description.

I recommend Roseanna, followed by The Laughing Policeman, and then The Fire Engine That Disappeared. You will never forget this world. Jeff B.

The Water Dancer
Ta-Nehisi Coates

The story of Hiram, a Virginian former slave who becomes an ally to the Underground through his brilliant memory and a mystical gift passed down through generations. A tour de force debut novel of vivid characters and imagery, in the vein of magical realism with an emphasis on realism. The Water Dancer is a profound reflection on the nature of memory and family, and on the dark legacy of an institution built upon their destruction. Matthew

A Slow Fire Burning
Paula Hawkins

A young man is found dead on a houseboat and three women are under the gaze of the police afterwards. All three have something to hide. Laura, the one night stand who left in a huff, has a questionable past of mental instability and probably wouldn’t tell the truth even if she knew what it was. Miriam’s previous life is worse than any horror movie you’ve seen and Carla has secrets and a deep resentment simmering. Who are these three women and what is their involvement in the death of Daniel? And how innocent is the victim anyway? The book switches between narrators and stories and constantly keeps you on your toes. From the author of The Girl On The Train. Evan A.

The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy
By Douglas Adams

A series of misadventures set in the farthest reaches of the galaxy after Earth has been destroyed to make way for a hyperspace bypass. A classic that still holds up, with richly imagined surreal storytelling. Like many, I find that my favorite part is Marvin the Paranoid Android, the most depressed AI in the history of fiction. Matthew K.

Susan, Linda, Nina & Cokie
By Lisa Napoli

Whether you listened to NPR on the way to school in your parent’s car or found the news station as an adult, most everyone has heard these extraordinary women give interesting and informative news segments on politics and culture. Journalist Lisa Napoli has written a riveting group biography of these four pioneering women and an early history of NPR. As she details each woman’s background and their determination to break into a male dominated profession, you can clearly hear their own unique voices. It makes one wish (at least me) for at least one more day of listening to any or all of them. Angela K.

On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft
By Stephen King

Stephen King’s life story, all about the process of writing and what it means to do it for a living. King’s narration is down-to-earth, pithy, often extremely funny. This book offers invaluable insight into the creative mindset. On top of that, it’s a well-made enjoyable memoir devoid of fluff and affectation. A humanizing look at one of the most prolific authors ever! Matthew K.

Cat Problems
Jory John and Lane Smith

In the third installment of their awesome picture book series, a pampered cat house has issues – the sun spot keeps moving; he keeps getting dry food instead of wet; and oh, the vacuum. Whether you are a fan of cats or not, this is a hilarious book that you won’t mind reading over and over to the young person in your life. Angela K.
