October... News, Events and What We are Reading!

Frost Is On The Pumpkin

While Indian summer lingers a bit here in the Bay Area, cozy sweater weather for reading is upon us. What better time, as the days grow shorter and the light fades, to curl up with a book. And since it’s Hispanic Heritage Month, I highly recommend something from our curated reading list of Hispanic/Latinx authors – from Isabel Allende, to Pablo Neruda, Javier Zamora or Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Carmen Machado and Gabriela Garcia. We’ve compiled a great selection from which to choose. Now is a good time to recognize and remember the many contributions Hispanics have made in our country including the books they have authored that help preserve, share, celebrate, explore, and evolve their culture. As always, reading is a path to tearing down walls and building bridges with each other for a more inclusive, collaborative and harmonious future.

Finally, SAVE THE DATE, Sunday, October 16, 3-6 PM for an Anniversary Party on the dock at your locally owned and operated independent bookstore – we will be celebrating three years in business having survived a global pandemic. Please join us for libations and live music.

Meanwhile, Happy New Year to all my Jewish friends celebrating Yom Kippur.

Long Live The Queen's Memory

Britain’s longest reigning monarch died last month, the same day our newsletter published. So this tribute to the remarkable Queen Elizabeth II is a month late, but still heartfelt. Despite being a daughter of the American revolution and third generation Californian, I have always been a monarchist at heart and marveled at the British royalty…some of whom I actually met, including the current King Charles. I know it’s silly perhaps. Maybe it’s my predominantly Welsh, Irish, Scottish heritage. But I have long harbored a fascination with the Crown (and yes the Netflix series does a good job). Elizabeth ascended to the throne the same year I was born. As is the case for many others, she’s the only Queen I’ve known. My 60th birthday was the same year as her Diamond Jubilee – her 60th year on the throne. I was privileged to have attended all the festivity in London that year. The woman was simply an incredible person, a steadfast leader and an inspiration. And of course, there were her hats… Much was written last month, much has previously been written, and much more will be written about her. As well it should be. Meanwhile, we have a lovely collection of books about my favorite monarch, including those below.

October is National Cookbook Month

As a cookbook connoisseur (I have a vast collection!) I am happy to offer the following recommended titles as we celebrate National Cookbook Month. These cookbooks offer more than just great recipes and beautiful photographs. They tell stories.

What We're Reading

The Cabala & The Woman of Andros

Thornton Wilder

Yes, there are many wonderful new voices in literature, but what divine and lavish pleasure to tuck into tales written long ago by a true master. Of course, I’d read Thornton Wilder in my early school days, but never his first novel The Cabala (published in 1926) which was somewhat eclipsed by his next novel – the Pulitzer Prize winning Bridge of San Luis Rey. Nor had I read the third novel that followed: The Woman of Andros. Both are captured between the covers of a newly released edition in celebration of what would have been the author’s 125 birthday earlier this year. A special edition which includes a note from his nephew Tappan Wilder and a very instructive section of Afterwords. I could not put the book down so captivated was I by the writing, the themes, and Wilder’s profound grasp of the classics, mythology, art, music and history. The writing is pure bliss – rich, dense, provocative and very satisfying. The Cabala is an irreverent and witty look at the intellectual aristocracy littering Rome in the early 1920’s, but a look laden with insightful observations and heavy motifs such as the “sufficiency of love”. The Woman of Andros, while set in ancient Greece in 400 BC, is just as entertaining and thought provoking a tale of a beautiful, intelligent and powerful hetaira (a highly cultured courtesan). I could go on and on. Just do yourself a favor, read these two stories. And then let’s chat. Cheryl P.

The Winners

by Fredrick Backman

In this long awaited final book to the loved hockey story, we follow the inhabitants of Beartown and Hed, bitter rivals for the bragging rights for who is the best hockey team. After a brutal storm damages both townships and kills a beloved town member, far flung children return home to attend the funeral and help mend the community. With his typical style of both humor and devastating analysis of small town politic, you will not want to miss this one. Angela K.

Nightcrawling

Leila Mottley

Not a light-hearted read, but an important one that you can’t let go of page after page. This brilliant debut novel from the 2018 Oakland Poet Laureate Leila Mottley is set just across the bay in Oakland. It chronicles one woman’s struggle for body and soul against fierce and devastating forces. Disturbing and raw, but almost poetic at times, this is essential reading from a talented new, young black voice. Cheryl P.

The Marriage Portrait

Maggie O'Farrell

In 16th century Florence, Lucrezia is betrothed to a charismatic and powerful duke after her sister’s death, and she is charged with producing an heir for a man that she’s convinced is plotting to kill her. The author presents a thoughtful and emotive story about her characters' inner lives, inspired by real-life figures of the Medici dynasty. The prose has the descriptive power that I love to read in fiction, with rich images and sensory details. Matthew K.

Wrong Place, Wrong Time

Gillian McAllister

This book has one of the most uniquely written plots that you will ever read. The book starts with Jen witnessing her teenage son commit a crime outside of her house. How did this happen? And who is the other man involved? The next day she wakes up and… it’s the day before the crime happened! Jen begins this backwards journey through time and works to discover how this happened, and if she can prevent it happening when that day comes around again. Wrong Place, Wrong Time is compelling and literally a page turner. It’s written in such a fast paced way that you better plan on curling up and reading for a few hours. Evan A.

The Many Daughters of Afong Moy

Jamie Ford

Beginning in 1892 China through 2045 Seattle, we follow seven generations of Moy women. Each have unique challenges to overcome. In 2045 as Dorothy experiences devasting mental challenge, through an experimental therapy she learns generational inherited trauma. Following the lives of her ancestors, one wonders about what is passed down generation to generation. A nifty piece of storytelling. Angela K.

The Ocean at the End of the Lane

Neil Gaiman

A man revisits his childhood home, prompting buried and incomprehensible memories to come to the surface, memories of extraordinary neighbors, otherworldly invaders, and a truly remarkable friend. The novel offers a challenging plot with very adult themes that also reflects on the nature and perspectives of childhood. The prose and imagination are brilliant in these pages. Given the Halloween season, I should also note that this book is home to some of the creepiest monsters Gaiman has ever created. And yes, that’s saying something! Matthew K.

Drive

James Sallis

I know it's happened to you as well. The most important person in your life loves something, and you adopt it as your own. For me, the film Drive was such an adoption. But this is the source of the film. She read it, I didn't. Until now. This is the sleekest of contemporary noirs, as thin as a Dashiell Hammett tale, but ricocheting off our memories of Peter O'Toole in 1980's The Stunt Man. If you start it, you will not put it down unfinished. Jeff B.

Shy: The Alarmingly Outspoken Memoirs of Mary Rodgers

Mary Rodgers, with Jesse Green

That I feel a bit conflicted about this one means absolutely nothing, because it is so damn important! Two years ago I recommended the Mike Nichols biography, which explored the same world, the same years, but from a Village perspective. This is the Upper West Side story, starring Stephen Sondheim, Leonard Bernstein, the daughter of Richard Rodgers (ie., the author), and introducing Carol Burnett, who was second only to Lucille Ball, in my mind, in claiming comedy for women. Green, who crafted this from years of conversations with Rodgers, is excellent at providing the context for her observations. Jeff B.

Artemous’s Brush with Adventure

Illustrated by Debbie Patrick;
written by Jim Patrick

This absolutely delightful and charming picture book features Artemous LeMouse who lives in a museum and restores famous works of art. Between the beautiful illustrations by Debbie Patrick, and the equally vivid pictures her husband Jim paints with his prose, children will learn about great works of art and the stories behind them in a fun and engaging, creative fashion.

We will be hosting a Storytime with these talented Sausalito locals on Saturday November 5th @ 11 AM. Debbie will bring her easel and do a painting demonstration; we’ll have a craft table where kids can draw their own masterpieces and the Patrick’s daughter

(a pre-school teacher) will read from the book. Please save the date and plan to bring the kids for a very fun, creative morning. Cheryl P.
