November... News, Events and What We are Reading!

With Love & Gratitude

As we celebrate our three year anniversary (3 years? Really?! Where did they go?) and as we slip into a season of thanksgiving, sincere and heartfelt gratitude to all of our patrons who have sustained us these past few years, especially our CSB (Community Supported Bookstore) members. Your support has been invaluable and truly life-saving for a small independent bookstore in a small community. Despite uncertainty and unrest on many fronts, let us all take time to be thankful for our friends and family and the many opportunities and gifts we have. We are truly the lucky ones in so many ways. Let’s also not forget those who are less fortunate. It is a time for giving and compassion. November is also Native American Heritage month – an irony we cannot ignore -- and we are proud to be hosting a community forum to celebrate the many gifts our indigenous people have given and to recognize their true history. I hope you will join us on November 18th. And finally, a huge thank you to my dedicated staff who have kept the boat afloat and are already as busy as Santa’s elves prepping for the Christmas season which will be unfolding soon before your very eyes!

4) East Bay poets Andrena Zawinski, Jeanne Wagner, and Susan Cohen joined us for readings of their poignant poetry.

5) Two centuries of women writers who turned heads and history… a lovely literary event co-hosted by the Sausalito Woman’s Club at their beautiful clubhouse.

6) “Where is Sarah” – the first in the Detective Cassidy Archer series by local author Sophie Shulman – was celebrated at our book launch celebration for the new mystery novel.

We have signed copies of ALL these books!
All of them make for GREAT fall reading!

Sausalito Books By The Bay Book Club

The Night Watchman
by Louise Erdrich

Winner of the Pulitzer Prize for fiction last year – the book is based on the author’s grandfather who worked as a night watchman and carried the fight against Native dispossession from rural North Dakota (the Turtle Mountain Reservation) all the way to Washington, D.C.. Set in the 1950’s, it is a powerful novel which explores themes of love and death during a time when our government threatened the rights of Native Americans to their land and their very identity. The author is a descendant of the Chippewa tribe. November is Native American Heritage Month.

What's New

Scarves – our collection of winter scarves have arrived including wool
and cashmere blends, affordably priced!

Jewelry by Rayner Needleman –Rayner is a local Sausalito artisan (and yoga instructor!) who lovingly handcrafts amazing necklaces, each is unique, one of a kind, mixing natural semi-precious stones with artifacts from different countries. Each piece carries an individual spirit and energy, weaving together past and present.

Patagonia – we are restocking our “mercantile” with on-the-go, hearty, healthy Patagonia soups, chili, smoked salmon and buffalo (!) jerky! Perfect for a quick meal afloat on your boat or at home. Oh, and anchovies! The Little Fish That Could. Anchovies may be little, but they punch above their weight when it comes to protein, vitamins, and omega-3s. Great in salads, on toast or pizza, or just right out of the can.

Columbian Satchels – Wayuu Mochilas are handmade (each incredible stitch!) by native Wayuu women in the state of Guajira in the extreme North of Columbia. A matriarchal society, these indigenous women have banded together to create these shoulder bags called “mochilas” and other handcrafts. Come in and take a look at the bottom of each bag – a work of art itself, inspired by the spider web.

Thanksgiving Dinner Wines

We have a wide range to choose from but my personal favorites for a traditional turkey dinner or a vegan/vegetarian Thanksgiving meal are a smooth subtle Pinot Noir (like Gary Farrell) or a soft Sauvignon Blanc (like the Cakebread). Whatever you do and wherever you are, drink responsibly, and don’t drink & drive.

What We're Reading

The Last Chairlift

John Irving

What can one say about the great John Irving? He may be my favorite living American writer. His first novel in 7 years, and what he says is his last “long novel”, is not for the faint of heart….it’s a huge, heavy tome clocking in at over 800 pages. (I could barely hold the book when reading it.) But it is captivating from page one. It is a ghost story and a love story, and it spans 80 years, starting in Aspen in 1941. It does involve skiing, but so much more. It is vintage Irving in its tragic and comic narrative (a combination he swears is essential) with the usual cast of unforgettable characters. (Who can forget Owen Meany or The Cider House Rules crew?) As always he does dysfunctional family brilliantly well and champions social issues, moral choices and kindness. There is a reason he is often considered a modern-day Dickens. I could go on. You must experience it for yourself. Cheryl P.

Agatha Christie – New Tales of Jane Marple

Multiple Authors

This book was so much fun! Whether you’re an experienced Miss Marple reader or this is your first time reading stories in the vein of Agatha Christie, you will love this book. It is 12 stand-alone tales starring Jane Marple by some of the best writers in the world and each has a very different style and setting. They are all based in different times (8 years after WWII back in London, on a steamer ship, in New York City in the late 1950s, and so on), and the writing is just so wonderful. Evan A.

Fairy Tale

Stephen King

A boy travels down a well and braves the evils of a magical world in order to save his dog. This book is a love letter to the romance and creepiness behind classic fairy tales, with a plot that adapts elements of YA fantasy into a work of mature and visceral fiction. The story is filled with King's distinctly human moments between characters that are trying their best. Fairy Tale deals far more with adventure and whimsy than horror, but there are enough gut-wrenching turns and unnerving set pieces to remind fans of exactly who they are reading. Matthew K.

Properties of Thirst

Marianne Wiggins

After building a ranch for his bride in the Owens Valley, Rocky Rhodes spends years feuding with the City of Los Angeles over water rights. After the untimely death of his wife, Rocky raises the twins Sunny and Stryker with the help of his sister. As war rages around the world, the US Government builds a internment camp next to the ranch. As the camp takes shape, the Rhodes family become entangled with the Department of Interior official tasked with building the camp. This epic story explores the nature of loss and the bonds of family and friendship through the examination of one of the darkest periods in our nation’s history. Angela K.

Make Your Art No Matter What

Beth Pickens

Deeply empathetic, with clear and down-to-earth prose, this book presents a chapter-by-chapter guide for overcoming and managing the most persistent roadblocks that all creators face. Topics range from motivation and self-doubt to financial game plans and major life events. It’s very easy to flip through to the exact talking point that matches one’s needs. Beth Pickins is a counseling psychologist and professional artist consultant, and it’s clear from page one that the reader is in good hands.

For The Love of Apricots–
Recipes & Memories of the Santa Clara Valley

Lisa Prince Newman

This is my favorite sort of cookbook – it has great recipes and photography, but it also tells a story. It is the author’s memoir of growing up in apricot orchards in the Santa Clara Valley – before semiconductors and silicon chips. The delicious recipes are a blend of old and new culinary styles, using both fresh & dried fruit, and are super accessible. But what resonated with me as much as the great tastes, was the tale of Santa Clara then and now (Silicon Valley); a transformation I witnessed as a third-generation native of the area and one my mother’s family experienced first-hand working in the orchards and canning factories. A sweet, and tart, nostalgic bite of history… as well as apricots! Cheryl P.

Paul: The Mind of the Apostle

A. N. Wilson

As we approach Christmas, it might be enlightening to ponder how it came to be this way. There are two excellent books I could recommend, one on the entirety of Christianity, the other on the Roman Empire's conversion under Constantine, both very important, but neither of which I was able to finish. I could recommend some of the better books on the Historical Jesus, but my favorite is no longer in print. Instead I'll recommend this, by the eminent biographer of Tolstoy and others. Watch, in slow motion, as oral tradition becomes myth, and myth becomes Biblical truth. Jeff B.

The Good Man Jesus and the Scoundrel Christ

Philip Pullman

Pullman's Lyra Belacqua, his heroine of the His Dark Materials trilogy, might figure more in our cultural discourse if she hadn't appeared at the same time as Harry Potter. Here, the author who has been pilloried for his less-than-veiled critiques of Christianity in the above (think the obverse of the Narnia universe), delves into an outwardly playful, yet inwardly incisive, reimagining of the Jesus tradition as a conflict between brothers. If it's not blasphemous to say so, the more you know about Biblical tradition, the funnier this is. Jeff B.
