February 2022... News, Events and What We are Reading

A Month for Black History
and Romance

February is Black History Month, so please remember that Black history is also American history, a part of our collective history. Let's recommit ourselves to fighting for equity, opportunity, and dignity for every Black American and countering the systemic racism that still haunts us all.

So many brave Black authors have been changemakers – now and in the past. There are so many names that come to mind from James Baldwin to Toni Morrison, Colson Whitehead, Isabel Wilkerson and Ta Nehisi Coates –to name just a few.

We are thankful for and celebrate books that have inspired new perspectives, promoted understanding and exchange of ideas. We have an entire book section on Black History, Racism and Black Lives Matter -- an extensive collection of fiction and non-fiction which includes both old and new titles. We’ll be showcasing these books in February and invite you to read at least ONE such book this month to expand your horizon.

Meanwhile, Valentine’s Day is on Monday this year, and we have lots of great gifts and Valentine cards for everyone. Whether you are celebrating Valentine’s Day with a sweetheart, “Galentine’s Day” with girlfriends, holding hands with an elderly family member or a young child, remember that love makes the world

go-round. It has also inspired some great literature… and we’ve compiled a wonderful reading list if you need a heart-warming story.

Hearts, flowers & love to all.
Cheryl

Be Prepared!

You probably missed the launch of the annual Girl Scout Cookie Campaign January 11th, but not to worry. It runs through April. If they aren’t already, Girl Scouts will soon be selling cookies in your area. Many are still only selling online, but I'm told you'll see some in their vests or sashes, in groups or with a parent working at booths or tables outside markets.

What you won't see are the hours their leaders spent coaching them on money skills, sales pitches, goal setting, and professionalism. What you won't see is a big number like 1000 written down in a little girl's handwriting and taped up by her bed or mirror – her goal for number of boxes sold. What you won't see is the pounding heart of a little girl who gets nervous talking to strangers.

What you won't see is her parent reviewing a summer camp brochure and scribbling down how much money she'll need to save each month plus how many boxes of cookies her daughter will need to sell in order to get there.

So please smile back.

Please speak kindly.

Please buy a box… or two or three or four. Give them away to others if you don’t want to eat them all yourself.

Please be patient while she counts money or uses the credit card reader.

Let her do the math.

Ask her about her cookie goal, about her badges, about her favorite Girl Scout experience.

Let her know she is valued.

A box of cookies can go a long way.

I was one of those Girl Scouts selling cookies. A long, long time ago. In those days we went door to door. I HATED it. I was one of those shy, nervous young girls (I know, hard to believe!). I didn't like "selling" anything. But I learned a lot.

I still have my badge sash. The Girl Scouts have been instrumental in empowering many young girls – providing them with the skills and confidence to succeed. I was one of them and am forever grateful to everyone who bought boxes of cookies from me and the many lessons learned.

We’re reading Hamnet
by Maggie O'Farrell

A beautifully crafted novel about William Shakespeare’s family life and the inspiration for his famous play Hamlet.. Fiction? Yes. But who knows or cares? It’s a great story. One of our favorite recently published books, now available in paperback. And yes, it is a love story. On many fronts. {$16.95}

What We're Reading

Violeta

Isabel Allende

Allende’s new novel does not disappoint. Violeta documents her life in a letter to an unnamed relative which begins in the 1920s and spans a hundred years, which includes earthquakes, pandemics, and political upheaval. Riveting from start to finish. Angela K.

A Darker Shade of Magic

V. E. Schwab

A rich fantasy story exploring four different versions of London from four different worlds, some with magic and some without. The plot centers on a wily magician ambassador who travels between the alternate Londons, and the hijinks which ensue when wild characters and otherworldly forces begin to cross between the Londons and collide with each other. This novel contains engrossing worldbuilding, elegant prose, and keen imagination, courtesy of Addie LaRue author V. E. Schwab. Matthew K.

Mouth to Mouth

Antoine Wilson

I read this novel in one sitting, just as the story is told. Two former classmates run into one another at an airport bar. One proceeds to tell the other a story of his life. The story of a how he saved a man’s life in a beach and changed the trajectory of his life. This was so compelling and entertaining and completely original. We get to indulge in the world of the highest-end art dealers and go skiing in the Alps. A complete and worthwhile escape. Evan A.

The Maid

Nita Prose

In this twisty fun book, Molly Gray’s challenges with social skills are the traits that make her a superb maid in the upscale Regency Grand Hotel. When she discovers the body of one of hotel’s most notorious guests, she becomes the only “person of interest” in the murder investigation. She will need all the help she can get from her few friends to help unravel what really happened. Angela K.

The Hollow Places

T. Kingfisher

A woman moves into her uncle's house during a time of upheaval, and she discovers a portal to another dimension in a hole in the drywall. With the guy from the coffee shop as her backup, she must explore this sinister other place and evade the cosmic horrors lurking within. A unique novel in the horror genre. I enjoyed the levity and redemptive themes that balance out the suspense. The dialogues and interactions between the sassy characters are a treat to read. Matthew K.

The Intuitionist

Colson Whitehead

This is where it all began, and a book I loved when it was published in 1999. It is not perfect, as most debuts aren't, but its audacity, its world building, and its underlying allegorical themes would form the basis for all that followed. If you know Colson solely from his last three novels you are in for a treat! Jeff B.

Ain't Burned All The Bright

Jason Reynolds

Artwork By Jason Griffin

A beautiful book – prose by Jason Reyonlds and amazing artwork by Jason Griffin. The brevity of the text with 300 pages of art provide a stunning story of one family living through the pandemic. Angela K.
