March 2022... News, Events and What We are Reading

Spring Forward with
Women’s History Month

These are disparate times. It’s unseasonably warm. It’s 35 degrees and frigid. COVID may be under control, but the Russians are not. Shades of 1939 if you ask me. Whatever and whoever you pray to, pray for the Ukrainians who are under savage, ruthless attack, their country invaded and violated. Is there solace in reading? Maybe. At the very least you can be inspired by women who have made a difference this month. Scientists, revolutionaries, writers, business leaders, politicians, war heroes – women who have pushed the envelope, shattered the glass ceiling, even risked their lives, women who have made the world a better place. Let’s remember and celebrate them during Women’s History Month. And may the luck of the Irish be with you.

What We're Reading

Olga Dies Dreaming

Xochitl Gonzalez

Wedding planner extraordinaire Olga and her congressman brother Preito grew up with their grandmother after their father succumbs to his drug abuse and their radical mother leaves to become a freedom fighter in Puetro Rico. Despite her ability to plan a perfect event, Olga is unable to find love herself, while Preito struggles to define himself through the lens of his constituency. This story has sharp wit with political intrigue and family drama set around the months of the most devasting hurricane in Puetro Rico’s history. Angela K.

Run Rose Run

Dolly Parton & James Patterson

What a fabulous story and everything you would expect from my personal hero, Lady Parton, and Patterson, the master of mysteries, and now these dream collaborations. A mysterious young country singer shows up in Nashville and a retired Queen of Country takes her under wing. But who is she really? And what, or who, is she running from? Whether your next to a fire in the snow or sitting on your first beach of the Spring, you will be transfixed. Evan A.

Her Hidden Genius

Marie Benedict

In a nod to Women’s History Month, another great work of historical fiction by Marie Benedict chronicling the life of Rosalind Franklin – a remarkable woman who changed the world by unearthing the secrets of DNA. Does it surprise you that she met with resistant from her male colleagues who then took credit for her discovery? This relentless woman devoted her entire life to science and research, unlocking the building blocks of life, and dramatically advancing our understanding of mankind. She is at long last getting the recognition she deserves. Here’s a shout out to books we’ve previously reviewed by local authors about other women who have made major contributions that were not at first recognized: Donovan Moore (What Stars Are Made Of: The Life of Cecilia Payne-Gaposchkin) and Ciji Ware’s spy sister series about American women who contributed to the allied efforts in WWII (Landing by Moonlight & Spy Above the Clouds). Cheryl P.

Tell Me An Ending

Jo Harkin

High tech firm Nepenthe has promised that you can remove a specific memory without effecting other parts of your life. Or can you? How important is one memory to your sense of self, your relationship with family and friends? As psychologist Noor delves deeper into her company’s miraculous technology, she explores identity, secrets and the power of memory. Angela K.

An Enchantment of Ravens

Margaret Rogerson

An offbeat romantic fantasy story set in a world where human craftspeople barter with high society fairies and exchange their wares for useful spells. The story centers on Isobel, a skilled painter who is abducted from her home after drawing the portrait of a particularly important fairy nobleman. The novel is full of vivid descriptions and neat commentary on self-expression and creativity. Isobel is self-aware and clever; she makes for an interesting first-person narrator. Matthew K.

The Paris Apartment

Lucy Foley

What do you do when you show up to your estranged brother’s apartment and he’s not there? Call the police? Ask around? Perhaps just unpack and start asking questions. Lucy Foley gives us another head scratcher novel of how well we know people, and how well we know ourselves. Evan A.

Nora Webster

Colm Toibin

I am always compelled to read an Irish author in March in honor of St. Patrick’s Day. And since March is all about women (Women’s History Month) this one seemed especially appropriate. Published in 2015, it’s a novel I never got to by this renowned author. Set in Wexford, Ireland, it is a heartrending tale of a strong woman who is widowed in her early 40’s, losing the love of her life and her way in life, left with 4 children and little money. A portrait of a woman recovering from grief and finding herself, this is a poignant tale of bravery and self-liberation. Toibin’s writing envelopes you, takes you back in time, you can feel the small Irish village, smell the sea. Quiet, but powerful prose that deserves a sip of Irish Whiskey.

How does a man write with such insight about a woman? I might also suggest reading a wee bit of Seamus Heaney this month. Cheryl P.

The City of Brass

S. A. Chakraborty

The City of Brass presents an intricate fantasy world where the landmarks, customs, and opposing factions are all painstakingly rendered. The novel follows Nahri, a cunning survivor who accidentally summons a powerful warrior spirit, and Alizayd, a prince in the kingdom of djinn who wrestles with his conscience. I was taken in by the themes of consequence and accountability, as well as the novel's focus on moral grey areas... the virtuous heroes have skeletons in their closets, and the villains all have a degree of humanizing depth. Matthew K.

The Original Bambi: The Story of a Life in the Forest

Felix Salten

This is a revelatory reintroduction of a criminally underappreciated classic of early 20th Century literature. The Disneyfication of Salten's allegorical tale about survival, and its relegation to "Children's Literature," has erased it of its context. As with many artistic expressions from the early 1920s, Bambi was a reaction by a European Jew to the devastation of the Great War. Including two dozen unforgettable full-page illustrations, it has been newly translated by our greatest living folklorist, Jack Zipes. Jeff B.

Whole Earth – The Many Lives of Stewart Brand

John Markoff

Remember the Whole Earth Catalog? It defined life for generations of young rebels – including myself – in the 60’s and 70’s. It’s author, Stewart Brand – has been a serial visionary always on the forefront of American counter culture, environmental awareness, Eastern and indigenous thought, and science. Author John Markoff, an award winning New York Times technology journalist, has crafted the first-ever intimate portrait of the iconic Stewart Brand based on years of interviews and interaction.

Don’t miss our event with Stewart and author John Markoff on April 7th.
