2nd Year #5
April 2020 ….
Our favorite books, literary quips, and great merchandise from our mercantile.

First and foremost, we hope you and yours are safe and well. Our heartfelt sympathy to all those who may be affected by this treacherous pandemic and our deep gratitude to all those first responders, health care professionals, and essential service providers on the front line. As we continue to shelter-in-place, socially isolate and do our part to keep the pandemic from escalating, reading continues to be a delightful pastime. Even a great escape.

What We're Reading

Scroll over image for information about the books

Children's Books

As mentioned in a recent Facebook post, I believe one can find great solace in reading children’s books. In fact some of them are as profound, if not more so, than many “adult” books. Even better, most of them can be finished in a day! A quick and highly satisfying foray – for all ages.

Ann Patchett penned a similar sentiment in a recent piece for the NY Times. She also touts the Kate DiCamillo books.

Homage to Spring & Easter on April 12

We have lots of Peter Rabbit and Beatrix Potter books as well as the classic Velveteen Rabbit. We also have Easter craft & coloring books, and darling handcrafted Mon Amie stuffed animal dolls.

Our gold rimmed Annie Glass plates and votives make great gifts to send to a loved one who you can’t gather with for the Easter or Passover holiday. We’ve also got a great collection of beautiful floral/garden books in stock to celebrate Spring

April is National Poetry Month

The venerable Poetry Night at the Sausalito Woman’s Club had to be canceled this month. So we asked the Mistress of Poetry, Barbara Holmes (the doyenne who has orchestrated this event for years) to share some of her favorite poets with us. Not an easy task! But here is her list which should keep you busy for a while.

Billy Collins - Mary Oliver - Szymborska - Liesel Mueller - Stephen Dunn

Pablo Neruda - Tony Hoagland - Rita Dove - Charles Simic - Robert Bly - Langston Hughes

Walt Whitman - Jack Gilbert - Nazim Hikmet -   Galway Kinnell - Wendell Berry

If we don’t have the prose you’d like to pursue, we’ll get it for you. There are also some great anthologies.

Lavish a Little Luxury on Yourself or a Loved One

Now might be a good time for a bit of pampering. We have a most indulgent collection of lotions, lip balms, bubble baths, body scrubs, and whipped body butters that will soothe the soul.

All that alcohol-based hand sanitizer dehydrating your poor hands? Margot Elena Tokyo Milk hand lotions (“Honey & The Moon” is my favorite with honey, jasmine & sandalwood) or the Cottage Greenhouse cucumber and honey shea butter creme will revive those hands.

What's New

The Bookshop Bakery

No reason to deprive ourselves of an occasional sweet treat or savory snack right now. Our own Sausalito-Cordon Bleu-trained chef Pam Henry has boxed up “Get ChipFaced” Quarantine Cookies – packages of chocolate chip, peanut butter/brickle chip & oatmeal cranberry cookies with walnuts. We also have "Anxiety Quarantine Kits" with decadent chocolate brownies. Also a "Quarantine Pity Party Kit for One” of spiced pecans and sweet & savory mixed nuts.

These are great home-baked goods that can be picked up curbside at the bookshop or delivered to your doorstep. We have several boxes in stock at the store this week and will be taking orders (via phone or email staff@sausalitobooksbythebay.com).

2nd Year #5

“I am coming to understand our current moment of uncertainty and isolation as an invitation. We are lifted out of our daily routines, maybe our ruts, and invited into a place where imaginations awaken.”
— W.S. Merwin
