June... News, Events and What We are Reading!

Dads, Grads, Brides & Pride

Congratulations to the Class of ’22 – so much to be proud about out there.

And – happy Father’s Day (June 19th) to all the great Dads. Mine passed away a decade ago, but he’s still with me and always will be. Simply the best. June 19th is also the day we commemorate the end of slavery in the United States, now known as Juneteenth.

A good time to renew our efforts to stem systemic racism and bridge racial divides.

We are launching into wedding season as well and I just want to say what a great idea it is to give BOOKS as party favors or as gifts to your wedding party. A special shout out (and congratulations!) to local artist Lucinda Eubanks (she exhibited at our shop last year) and her new husband Steve Woodside who did just that!

And finally, here’s to the big pride event in June as we celebrate the LGBTQ community all month. We have great books paying tribute to of all of these special events and wonderful gifts for grads, dads and brides, so come see us!

On a somber, closing note. I don’t usually dip into politics OR sports here, but what is wrong with our politicians that they won’t ban assault rifles? Does an 18-year old need to buy a gun? How many more children need to die? How many more times do we have to read: “Authorities said the gunman was able to obtain the weapon(s) legally”? Recommended reading on the subject: Nicholas Kristof in the New York Times

As Steve Kerr, the Golden State Warriors basketball coach said so passionately in reference to the recent Uvalde shooting: “When are we gonna do something…I’m tired of the moments of silence.” Dear Mr. Kerr – you and your team make me proud. Per your suggestion, I’m trying to do something by writing these words to the many people who read my newsletter. We should not be silent about this national crisis. Go Warriors.

America Second

How America’s Elites Are Making China Stronger

A riveting book that provides a candid and well-researched overview of how American diplomats (in both political parties) and business leaders have pandered to the Communist Party of China over the past 50 years and what the consequences may be. A cautionary tale about sacrificing truth in pursuit of business success in China.

A former Beijing correspondent for

Newsweek, who lived in China for 6 years, the author is also CEO of Strategy Risks,

a research firm in NYC.

In the Woods
by Tana French

The author's debut novel which is still one of the best Irish crime thrillers... Dublin, 1984, missing children. One of the children – who was at first missing –becomes a detective investigating a similar crime years later. Chilling, taut and "richly atmospheric with ingenious plotting".

What We're Reading

This Time Tomorrow

Emma Straub

There is a certain theme running through fiction these days, and this book follows suit in a wonderful way. Alice falls asleep in her childhood bedroom on her 40th birthday, only to wake up on the morning of her 16th! And much to her shock, her father, who is ailing in the hospital in real time, is fit and, being under 50, not “that old.” Bouncing back and forth in a time travel Groundhog Day (just go with it, it works) Alice and Leonard learn about each other as daughter and father, but also as real people. Evan A.

The Lionesss

Chris Bohjalian

Another incredible story from Bohjalian, an author who never ceases to amaze me. He is one of the most diverse story tellers around. This time, instead of zooming around Vietnam looking for a virus, discovering dead bodies in hotel rooms or facing a witch trial in Salem, we are jetted to Africa in the 1950s to safari with movie stars in their prime. But all is not right on this safari, and there is a deadly price to pay for all that wealth and fame. Take a weekend off to focus on this exciting new book! Evan A.

Hide

Kiersten White

A motley group of struggling millennials sign up for a bizarre reality show contest: a game of extreme hide and seek in a huge abandoned amusement park! But the game takes a dark turn as a diabolical secret slowly comes to light. The book is often whimsical and silly, but the elements of horror and suspense are well handled. I was drawn in by the cast of characters, struggling to accept or resist the reality-TV molds and personas that they are forced into. A definite page turner! Matthew K.

Lesson in Chemistry

Bonnie Garmus

Elizabeth Zott is a one-of-a-kind chemist : a woman in a man’s world. It is the 1960s, and women are not scientists, they are secretaries or at best, lab technicians to the far more superior men in the field. But Elizabeth refuses to adhere to those rules, subsequently losing her job and ends up unexpectedly as the TV host of Dinner at 6:00, where she imparts the chemistry of cooking to housewives in Sothern California. Along the way we find and fall in love with a full cast of funny and moving characters which will keep you reading late into the night. Angela K.

The Children on The Hill

Jennifer McMahon

In a nod to Frankenstein, Jennifer McMahon explores the bonds of siblings and the horror of having a monster in your family. As an adult, Lizzy Shelley, a “famous” monster hunter of podcast and TV fame, investigates the disappearance of young women for whom no one looks. One investigation brings her back her where she and her siblings living with their famous Gran, Dr. Helen Hildreth, but isolated from the world. Is it possible that her sister is the one involved in the disappearances? Angela K.

When Women Were Dragons

Kelly Barnhill

On a seemingly ordinary day in the 1950s, thousands of women across America spontaneously transform into uncontrollable dragons. The novel follows two girls, Alex and Bea, as they struggle come to terms with “The Dragoning” even as the event is forcibly covered up and tabooed. The novel has brilliant descriptions and delicious prose! Matthew K.

Left On Tenth

Delia Ephron

I tore through this new memoir by Delia Ephron in two days! We start with a grieving Delia who has lost not only her beloved sister, Nora, but her husband of 37 years, Jerry, as well. Through sickness and humor Delia meets Peter… a psychiatrist from Mill Valley!! They fall in love over email, two widowed septuagenarians, and it’s really incredible. Full disclosure, her Romeo is the father of a high school friend! She moves to San Rafael, she shops at the farmers market and talks of the fancy shops beneath the Redwoods in Mill Valley. The depth of her ability to write such true emotions is truly a gift. I can’t wait to share it with everyone I know. Evan A.

America 2nd – How America’s Elites Are Making China Strong

Isaac Stone Fish

Yes, Russia and the Ukraine are concerns. But perhaps nothing compared to China. This riveting book provides a candid and well-researched overview of how American diplomats (in both political parties) and business leaders have pandered to the Communist Party of China over the past 50 years and what the consequences may be. A cautionary tale about sacrificing truth in pursuit of business success in China. A former Beijing correspondent for Newsweek, who lived in China for 6 years, the author is also CEO of Strategy Risks, a research firm. He will be visiting us from New York and discussing his new book on July 19th. Save the date! Cheryl P.

The Garden Refresh: How to Give Your Yard Big Impact on a Small Budget.

Kier Holmes

Local garden designer and writer Kier Holmes offers one of the most practical and user-friendly garden guides I’ve seen recently replete with plenty of great ideas and fabulous photos. Great design suggestions, step-by-step directions, and planting & growing advice. Just in time for the summer gardening season.

No green thumb required! Cheryl P.
