NEW INDEPENDENT BOOKSTORE TO OPEN IN SAUSALITO
Sausalito, CA Sausalito Books by the Bay – a locally owned and operated, independent bookstore -- will open on the Sausalito waterfront in October. The new bookshop has taken over the space formerly occupied by a bookstore at 100 Bay Street on the Sausalito Yacht Harbor Marina in the heart of the downtown area.
The new venture will feature specially curated books for the local community and its many visitors, as well as merchandise that is unique to Sausalito. Decorative interior décor accessories, table top and high caliber gifts and nautical swag will be available. Gourmet picnics to grab and go prepared by local chefs are also planned.
The all new, completely remodeled bookshop will host author events, literary salons, book clubs, writing workshops, a Mother Goose Children’s Story Time and other special events. A Community Supported Bookstore membership program has also been launched which entitles members to discounts and other perks.
Located on the downtown marina boardwalk, the bookstore is just a half block off Bridgeway. While there is free parking in front of the store to facilitate access, home delivery of books will also be offered to Sausalito residents.
The owner, Cheryl Popp, is a local business woman who has been a Sausalito resident for 29 years. She is well-known for her leadership, community service and involvement in the local area. (Please see CV that follows.)
“Our goal is to really engage the local community – the residents, the local organizations, other merchants -- as well as the visitors who flock to Sausalito,” said Ms. Popp. She believes that for independent businesses to survive today, especially a bookstore, they need a sustainable business model which involves cross-merchandising, targeted marketing and community engagement. “We’re selling books and some very lovely merchandise, but we’re also selling community.”
The staff at Sausalito Books By the Bay have over 30 years of cumulative experience in the bookselling business. “Our booksellers are top notch,” said Ms. Popp, ”They love books and can provide far more insight and authenticity than an online retail experience.”
Ms. Popp feels she knows the demographic in Sausalito and says, “I’m getting everyone I know involved in helping to craft a bookshop that works for all of us.”
The store will be open 7-days a week, 10 AM – 6 PM. A grand opening celebration is slated for Thursday, October 10th, 5-7 PM, and will include a ribbon-cutting ceremony with local dignitaries.
